When was the last time you did something for the first time?
The Walt Disney World Goofy Challenge was surly a first for me. The race consisted of two back to back races (the WDW half on Saturday and the WDW full on Suday) equating to 39.3 miles in two days of pure Disney magic.
So how does one even prepare for 39.3 miles in 48 hours?
^ and that’s what I did, fearlessly followed the wise man’s words and ran, far and long, miles and miles for 18 full weeks. Not really knowing what to expect I followed Hal Higdon’s (a programmer who has never steered me wrong) 18 week intermediate plan.
The hardest part.. finding time to schedule 2 back to back long runs in one week.
What got me through it.. the healthy dose of pixie dust I’d take before daydreaming of running through Disney’s Magic Kingdom, Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Disney’s ESPN Wild World of Sports, and finishing by running around the world in Epcot. Truly magical.
And that it was, a totally fanatical experience. I felt like I was flying through my childhood as I ran through the parade in Magic Kindgdom and high fived my favorite character Donald Duck on my way to the finish line. I completely shocked myself finishing the Goofy Challenge 3rd in my age group with a half time of 1:40:34 and the full time of 3:34:02.. talk about disney magic!
And the best part.. inspiring my husband to run his second half marathon and my sister to finish her first full! Family is everything to me and there was nothing better then finishing both races with my two best friends by my side. 39.3 magical miles, 3 shiny new medals to hang up and my second Boston Qualifier in the books, I'd say I made Goofy proud :)
