Boston Training T-minus-5 Weeks

Gratitude Changes All Things

Sometimes the world tells you to slow down. Sometimes it forces you. I’m sitting here shivering under my covers, bed written for the 3rd straight day, brain fogged with the flu and trying to reflect on last week’s training. I can’t help but feel saddened and even a bit depressed thinking of all the training I should and could be conquering. I wanted this week’s update to be about admiration and who pushes me forward when I feel like slowing down. I wanted to talk about how I started coaching Spring track this week and how admirable my young athletes’ perseverance and vigor drive me to become a better runner myself.

But instead I’d rather talk about gratitude, the quality of being thankful.

Take a moment: If you stopped yourself every single time you were about to say, “I have to” and changed it to “I get to,” it might change your entire experience.

As I lay here, practically immobile, I can’t help but thank God that this flu will soon pass and that once is does, I get to run again.

Next time you are faced with something you think you find challenging or stressful, do yourself a favor, overcome the negative self-talk and start saying thank you for the things you truly value and enjoy.

Monday: 5 mile Easy Run/SoulCycle = 5 miles

5.0mi; 42:17; 8:28/mi

I hate to say it, but Monday’s have become less about running and more about cycling for me. I truly look forward to my Monday night cardio party at Atkin’s SoulCycle class. So I kept it easy in the morning and lit it up on the bike that night.

Tuesday: 10.15 mile run

10.15mi; 1:26:56; 8:34/mi

(8:50, 8:45, 8:43, 8:37, 8:31, 8:30, 8:27, 8:29, 8:28, 7:36)

Nice paced 10 mile run in Central Park before coaching Middle School track practice followed by some quality family time at Il Violino Trattoria :)

Wednesday: Exhale Core Fusion Barre/SoulCycle

I wanted this to be a slower day because I knew I had big miles coming up later in the week, plus it was my sister in laws birthday so we celebrated the obvious cardio party way at Soul.

Thursday: REST

Thursday was meant to be a speed work day at the track but it was the first day I started feeling alittle run down so I decided to give myself the day off and try to make up for it later in the week.

Friday: 10 mile speed work/tempo run combo/Yoga Vida

10.50mi; 1:25:04; 7:51/mi

Since I believe speed day is as important as long run day, I decided to combo it with my longer run today:

3 mile warm up

6 x 800 at 5k pace, 400 recovery

2.50 mile cool down

This was a pretty tough workout for me seeing as I was already feeling rundown. I decided to try and sweat out whatever I was feeling at 60 minute hot yoga later that night, which did relieve some soreness and make me feel much better, for the time being..

Saturday: 20 mile long run

20mi; 2:57:15; 8:51/mi

Saturday was sort of a bittersweet long run. I woke up early, feeling alittle rundown but eager to get going. Had my usual coffee with 1 shot of espresso and a bowl of cereal. I knew I wasn’t 100% but for some reason long runs always give me some sort of rush so I was excited to get going. I started out feeling pretty good, then somewhere around mile 12 it hit me.. my body grew weak, my breath grew short, my pace got longer and longer.. I didn’t know what was happening. I wanted to quit so bad but I would never let myself do that. I finished the 20 and immediately fell to the ground in exhaust. Later that night I realized it was more then just fatigue, I was sick. I was proud to have finished my long run but knew it was time to rest and recover for awhile.

Sunday: REST

Monday: 5 easy

Tuesday: 10.15 easy

Wednesday: cross train

Thursday: REST

Friday: 10.50 speed/tempo

Saturday: 20 long

TOTAL: 45.65
